Individual note:
Nikki,
I think Jet spelled her name with two “t”s, but that may have been an affe
ctation because Purr, as all who knew him called him, spelled his nickna
me with two “r”s. Purr was indeed a physicist, and his work was much mo
re complicated than just his job with Allied Chemical. He was a major con
tributor to particle acceleration research in the 40s. I’m afraid that
’s as far as I can go with that information.
Dr. Robert A. Black, Jet’s father, was in the delivery room at the ti
me of the girls birth. He, without consulting his daughter Jett, had t
he infant taken to an institution, for she was born with Downs Syndrome, a
nd it was the father’s judgement that the entire family would have been ve
ry burdened with her care and attention. Today, such a secret would ha
ve been hard to keep. Jet was told that the child was born still. Lat
er Jet found out the matter, as will most truth will finally out, and s
he visited, and got to know her daughter. I am unsure about her exact dea
th date, but she did not live to full maturity.
Of course, Purr and Jett’s boys were very tall, but hated sports as a sugg
ested way to fly. Jet was very tall, at near 6’, and Purr was taller stil
l. They had giants for sons. I don’t know exactly how tall they were, b
ut I do remember they had to watch their heads constantly.
My mother, Elouise, was so named Elouise rather than Eloise because it w
as to honor both Louise Drew Peavey and Ella McCarty Peart, my maternal gr
eat grandmothers. Ella was a person I lived with as a child. Ella’s maid
en name was Hamma, an American Indian name, and while she never made any s
ecret of the fact, she also never liked being called Ella Hamma, as was t
he habit of Louise Drew Peavey. As for Mary Cleland, I believe her latt
er years were spent in Florida near Orlando, and she drank a lot of Coca C
ola ( like Babe Ruth). We visited her every time we went, and she was a g
racious woman as I recall. Her back yard went down to a small lake or pon
d…I’ll go with lake, but I was young, so things looked bigger then.
My mother was raised by Louise for a short while after the death of Thali
a. The nickname “Binedear” came from the fact that the family has heavi
ly endowed all of its members with nicknames that had nothing to do with t
heir actual name. My mother’s nickname was “Maud”, after Beatrice Lillie
’s recording “There Are Fairies Living at the Bottom of my Garden” I h
ad tagged her with it after the phrase, “You’re rotten to the core Maud, a
nd Maud agreed” Louise was tagged with Binedear, because my mother didn
’t hear My Dear correctly, and morphed it into Binedear, and it stuck wi
th everyone, as did my crowning of my mother with Maud. What goes arou
nd comes back to us all.
The letter to Daniel Drew from his Nephew Cyrus King Drew, is dated Novemb
er, 19, 1829. It is a plea for a job, although they certainly beat arou
nd the bush on matters in those days. I am sorry to tell you that the Ham
es, which was a small hand carved étagère using an ox hame as the frame, a
nd was a dated and signed relic, which was made on the journey over he
re in the late 1500s by one of my antecedents. It was lost to theft in 19
75, out of our home on Belgravia Court.
Back in those days, coming to America was a real adventure, not to say gam
ble. It appears that this gamble was made by both the Weavers and Clelan
ds very early; one staying north and the other south. This made for so
me very interesting and heated discussions at the dinner table. Ella w
as a Quaker and taught Elouise well about her ideas of right and wrong, a
nd the Weaver’s owned slaves. Cotton was a natural coming from Argy
le to escape the King’s 50% tax on all woven goods, but later than my moth
er’s side of the family.
More later. Much to do today. Happy New Year, and now we’re all in the n
ew one.

Wm. C. Weaver
