who died on Sunday 29th December 1940. Age 23.

The cemetry is at Heavitree, off the Pinhoe Road.

He trained at No.12 Elementery Flying School, then No.5 Flying Training Sc hool, before being awarded his ‘Wings’ as a qualified pilot on 19th June 1 940. At this point he was a sergeant Pilot, and his service number was 754 835 RAFVR, this changed on 27th July 1940 when he was promoted to Pilot Of ficer 83718 RAFVR. He joined his first and only Squadron, No.263, on 1st A ugust 1940 and flew 28 Operational sorties on Hurricanes. In December 19 40 the Squadron changed aircraft to the Westland Whirlwind, and Donald fl ew his first and as it turned out, only Operational sortie on them on 29 th December 1940. Along with 2 other pilots he was tasked with escorti ng 2 flying boats that were arriving from Bermuda. They were to fly out ov er the Western Approaches, rendezvous with the flying boats and escort th em back to Britain. The Whirlwinds took off from RAF Exeter and flew out a cross Devon. Unfortunately they encountered low cloud and poor visibili ty and unfortunately two of the three flew into rising ground. The third m anaged to return to Base but did not know where his colleagues had crashe d, and it was not until March 1941 when the winter snows thawed, that Dona ld and his colleague were found. They had both died instantly, and are bur ied in Exeter High Cemetery, Donald is in plot 81 section ZK. rob.bowater@@ btinternet.com
