Note for: Richard Paddison, 16 JAN 1801 - 6 DEC 1895 Index
Goulding writes 'Richard Paddison bapt. at Louth 18 Jan. 1801, son of Robe
rt Paddison*, attorney, and Ann his wife. He followed his father's profess
ion and was admitted a solicitor in 1824. He became the local leader of t
he Reform party at Louth and had a great skill of persuasive eloquence a
nd displayed extraordinary skill in marshalling and presenting facts and a
rguements. He always endeavoured to appeal to the understandings of his he
arers or readers, stating his facts clearly and correctly, and supporti
ng his contentions not only with cogent arguements but also with apt and a
nimated illustrations.
William Cobbett, who visited Louth in 1830, passed the following euology u
pon him in his 'Rural Rides';
'At Louth the wise corporation had refused to let us have the playhouse; b
ut my friends had prepared a very good place;and I had the opportuni
ty of addressing crowded audiences two nights running. At no place ha
ve I been better pleased than at Louth. Mr. Paddison, solicitor, a young g
entlema whom I had the honour to know slightly before, and to know whom, w
hether I estimate by character or by talent, would be an honour to any ma
n, was particularly attentive to us.'
Goulding then gives details of speeches and papers of Paddison.
Paddison was the first Town Clerk of Louth under the Municipal Corporati
on and he held office from 1836 - 1842, when he removed to Richmond.
He practised at 57 Lincolns Inn Fields and in 1860 he was appointed solici
tor to the Irish Peat Commission. He died at 7 Park Hill Richmond on the 1
8th Dec. 1874. His widow (Charlotte daughter of George Jackson of North Re
ston) died at South Kensington 6th Dec. 1895. He had five children; Geor
ge - who became an engineer, Robert Charles born 1827; Marianne, who di
ed 2nd Feb. 1841 aged 12; Richard William who died 1st Jan. 1841 aged 11 a
nd Howard Paddison who was bapt. at Louth 21st. Nov. 1833 and was in partn
ership with his father 1871-74.
