Note for: John de Warrene, 1286 - 1347 Index
Eighth Earl Warrene, Earl of Surrey and Sussex.
[1286-1347]
John Earl Warren 8th, grandson of John 7th Earl, married the 10 year old J
oan de Bar [Barr], grand-daughter [some sources say daughter] to Edwa
rd I.
The childless marriage was not successful and both sued for divorce b
ut as a result the Pope excommunicated John.
John produced many "divers bastards" and left no lawful issue, the esta
te was thus transferred to King Edward II17.
In 1304 he assumed the title earl of Sussex, which his grandfather has al
so titled himself. In 1310 John joined Edward II in an invasion of Scotlan
d. However by 1312 he rebelled against Edward II . John quarrelled with Pi
ers Gaveston, Edward II's favourite, and joined the party of barons at Sca
rborough [Knaresborough32.] in 1312, when Gaveston was taken prisoner. S
ee Bulmer's Gazeteer.
But John capitulated in 1313 when Gaveston was murdered by the Earls of Wa
rwick, Lancaster, Hereford and Arundel and returned to supporting Edward I
I, a king unpopular with half of the people.
By 1314 John had been proceeded against for divorce17. [others say both pa
rties filed for divorce]
In 1315 John quit claimed the castles of Sandal and Conisbrough along wi
th estates at Sowerby, Dewsbury, Halifax and estates in other counties1
At this time Earl Warrene's steward was John de Doncaster25.
In 1316 John 8th Earl Warrene was excommunicated for adultery by pope Jo
hn XXII32 with an Isabel de Houland and Matilda de Mairford17[some sourc
es say Maud de Neirford of Castle Acre, Norfolk]. Both producing illegitim
ate children. In 1317 Edward II granted the manor to Matilda and her two n
atural sons by John [John and Thomas de Warrene]. Later John 8th Earl Warr
ene married Matilda. [others say Isabel de Houland who d. 1389]
John 8th Earl Warrene had a disagreement with Thomas the Earl of Lancast
er [the death of Gaveston , although some have suggested that John earl Wa
rrene helped Thomas's wife to elope with her lover] which led to Lancast
er laying siege to Sandal Castle in 1317 which Lancaster burnt to the grou
nd. Between 1317 and 1319 Thomas Plantagenet, earl of Lancaster seized mu
ch of John's land.
J.W. Walker stated that a Robert Hood of Wakefield was on a roster to jo
in the army against Scotland but appaently did not appear24.
In the 12th year of Ed. II (1319) this John de Warren was forced to gra
nt the manor to Thomas Earl of Lancaster, probably because of Earl Warren
es licentiousness and resultant ex-communication by the Pope.
From 1320 Thomas Earl of Lancaster built a stone castle at Sandal Magna.
Following the short tenure of the estates by Thomas, John who had marri
ed Matilda de Mairford, his former concubine, received back the estate
s, whilst the remainder was given to their two sons, John de Warren and Th
omas de Warren [both born before the marriage].
Thus John 8th earl died without lawful issue in the 21st year of Ed. II
I* (about 1347-8)17 possibly from the "Black Death". This is the same ye
ar as Joseph Hunter, the Yorkshire Antiquarian calculated the death of a n
on-historical figure, "Robin Hood" at Kirklees26. Matilda (now Counte
ss de Warren) lived until the 33rd year of Edward III (about 1360), her t
wo sons John and Thomas dying before her. The Wakefield Manor revert
ed to the crown in 1362 and the barony and revenues were now given by E
d. III to his six year old son Edmund de Langley/Longley [later the Du
ke of York], who later died at the Battle of Agincourt (others say his bir
thplace, Kings Langley). The Earldom of Warrene was now given by Edward I
II to Richard Fitzalan II, Earl of Arundel.
